New River Gorge Bridge

New River Gorge Bridge

« Previous   Main  Next »

With a length of 3030 feet (924 m), New River Gorge Bridge was was for many years the longest in the world of its type. Quoting the above-linked Wikipedia article: 'The New River Gorge Bridge carries U.S. Highway 19 over the New River and the CSX railroad at a height of 876 feet (267 m), making it the highest vehicular bridge in the Americas, and the second-highest in the world. (Before the 2004 opening of the Millau Viaduct in France, it was the highest in the world.)'

What for an impressive iron bridge- like a rainbow- its beauty the travellers by train and car can never see!

On the other we cannot see the four lanes- unimaginable! Bridges are always fascinating constructions - because of their useful connecting technical functions and their deeper symbolism"

This a fine view of this recording holding bridge. I like how you've framed the shot and used this huge rock as a foreground object. Well done.

This is a wonderful photo Harry! The New River itself is one of the most interesting rivers in the United States as well. It's name is really quite a misnomer as it is, I believe, the oldest river...at least in the eastern US.
About Me

Photography by Harry O’Connor - Retained-Images contains mostly new photographic images, but I occasionally dip into my slide and negative archives to present a favorite shot. I try to be more about photos than photoshop, but I am always trying to improve the images I present.

My primary camera is a Konica-Minolta Maxxum 5D with the kit 18-70mm and an older 100-300mm lens.

My point-and-shoot is a Sony DSC V1 that I got in August 2004, and I haven’t shot a frame of film since.

I currently live in North Carolina, but have images from many locations around the U.S and a few locations in Canada, Mexico and Europe.
